Basketball Opens League Play Wednesday Against Tulane

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Golden Eagles open Conference USA play with the first home game of the new year, hosting the Tulane University Green Wave, Wednesday, at Reed Green Coliseum. Tip-off for the game is set for 7 p.m.
Southern Miss, under the direction of second-year Head Coach Larry Eustachy, enters the game with a 6-9 overall record following last week's 80-57 loss to Auburn in the final non-conference game of the year. The Green Wave, under the direction of first-year Head Coach Dave Dickerson, stand 4-8 overall on the year, winning its last game, 78-60 over Savannah State on Jan. 7.
Wednesday's game will be broadcast over the Southern Miss ISP Sports Network, with the "Voice of the Golden Eagles" John Cox and legendary coach M.K. Turk calling the action. Air time begins at 6:30 p.m., CT, with the Golden Eagle Courtside Show.
Junior guard Jarekus Singleton currently leads Southern Miss in scoring with 141 points on the season, an average of 9.4 points per game. Freshman guard Courtney Beasley follows closely with 140 season points, averaging 9.3 per game, while senior forward Jason Forte is third with 131 season points, an average of 8.7 per game. Junior forward Mildon Ambres and Forte pace the team on the boards, with rebounding totals of 67 and 65 per game apiece. Junior guard Kyle Lamonte remains the team leader in assists with 47 on the season, while Singleton and Beasley follows with respective totals of 31 and 27.
Sophomore forward David Gomez currently leads the Green Wave with 153 points on the season, averaging 12.8 per game. Senior center Quincy Davis has 126 season points, an average of 10.5 per game, and junior guard Chris Moore has 117 points on the year, averaging 9.8 per game. Sophomore forward Donnie Stith paces the team in rebounds with 68 on the year, an average of 5.7 per game, and junior guard Andrew Garcia is second with 54 total rebounds. Garcia also leads the team in assists with 46 overall, followed by Ryan Williams' total of 28. The Green Wave finished the 2004-05 season with an overall record of 10-18 and a 4-12 mark in Conference USA, finishing 12th in the league.
The game marks the 61st all-time meeting between the two schools, with Tulane leading 36-24. Southern Miss has won three of the last four in the series, but Tulane won the last meeting 75-72 on Feb. 9, 2005, in New Orleans. In all, 28 games have been played at Reed Green Coliseum, with Southern Miss leading 15-13 in those games. The Golden Eagles have won three in a row at Green Coliseum, including last season's 61-60 victory on Jan. 22.
Following the game, Southern Miss continues league play on the road, traveling to Tulsa, Okla., to take on the University of Tulsa. Tip-off for that contest is set for 7 p.m.
