Football Continues Preparations For East Carolina

HATTIESBURG, Miss.? The Southern Miss football team practiced for two hours today at the Joe P. Park practice facility, continuing preparations for Saturday?s first Conference USA game against East Carolina.

The 2005 season has been one of uniqueness so far for the Golden Eagle football team, as two hurricanes, Katrina and Rita, have forced the rescheduling of two games, Tulane to Nov. 26 and Houston to Nov. 12 or 13, respectively.

But with no hurricane in the forecast this weekend, the team can practice knowing it will have a game to play this weekend. Head Coach Jeff Bower said that knowledge has the team excited to play.

?I hope they are anxious to play,? Bower said. ?We?ve had a start and stop to our season. The players understand that East Carolina is a totally different team than last year. We have to get ready to play well. I remember in 2003 when we won the Conference USA title, we ended the season up there and we had our hands full. They were struggling at that time too, but like anyone, they will play well at home.?

Bower said the team is healthy entering the game and that junior cornerback Caleb Hendrix (hamstring) is ?fine.?

Kickoff for the Southern Miss-East Carolina game is set for 5 p.m.
