Softball Falls In Doubleheader To Houston

Danielle Wymer pitched a career best one-hit complete game today against Houston.

Krystal Crooks struck out a career-high six batters today against Houston.

HATTIESBURG, Miss.? The Southern Miss softball team dropped a doubleheader to Houston today, 3-0 and 1-0, as the program celebrated the retirement of former standout Amy Berman?s jersey, while also recognizing the All-30 team, part of softball?s weekend celebration of 30 years of women?s athletics at Southern Miss.

With the losses, Southern Miss falls to 19-28 overall, 5-12 in Conference USA, while Houston improves to 25-20, 8-6. The Lady Eagles have now lost 10 straight, matching its longest slide since dropping 10 in a row in 2002.

In the first game, Lady Eagle pitcher Danielle Wymer took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. She got the first two outs in the inning, before Jaci Gonzalez connected on a RBI double to right field, which scored Brooke Johnson, who was on base with a walk, as Houston took a 3-0 lead.

?Danielle pitched a great ballgame,? Southern Miss Head Coach Gay McNutt said. ?We just couldn?t get anything going offensively..?

Houston got two runs in the second, thanks to three errors by the Lady Eagle defense. Kristen Glowacz walked to start the inning, but was caught stealing second base. Following a strikeout by Jeanie Davis, Michelle Keith reached on a fielding error by Southern Miss left fielder Allison Bullard, advaning to second on the play. Brandi Clark then reached on another fielding error by Bullard, which allowed Keith to score. Brooke Johnson then reached on a throwing error by Danielle Wymer, which allowed Clark to score, as the Lady Cougars led 2-0.

Houston pitcher Angel Shamblin (9-7) got the win, as she held the Lady Eagle offense to three hits, while striking out five and walking two.

Wymer (8-13) pitched her ninth complete game of the season in a losing effort, as she recorded the best pitching performance of her career, allowing jut one hit. Wymer also struck out seven, against three walks.

In the second game, a pitcher?s duel ensued between Houston?s Carla Kennimer and Lady Eagle Krystal Crooks.

The game was scoreless until the fifth, when Houston got a RBI base hit from Kristen Glowacz to take a 1-0 lead.

Southern Miss had an opportunity to knot the contest at 1-1 in the seventh. Charity Butler walked to lead off the inning, and Houston changed pitchers to Crystal Briscoe. Before Briscoe threw a pitch, she balked, advancing Butler to second. Following a Melissa Prouty fly out to left field and a strike out by Sue Logan, Briscoe again balked, advancing Butler to third. However, the Lady Cougars escaped damage, as she struck out Danielle Martin to end the game.

Kennimer (8-5) got the win for Houston, holding the Lady Eagle bats to three hits, while striking out five. Briscoe earned the save.

Crooks (10-10) took the loss, but pitched her 14^th complete game of the season, striking out a career-high six batters, while walking one.

Jessica Huerta led the team with two hits and two stolen bases on the day.

The two teams will meet in the series finale, Sunday, at 1 p.m., at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
