Basketball Adds Fourth Signee, Inks Cornwell
HATTIESBURG, Miss.
"David is a very tough kid who will be a physical presence for us," Eustachy said. "He's a great defender and rebounder, who has the ability to score. That, along with his size and strength, can really help us."
A 6-foot-8 forward from Louisville, Ky., Cornwell had an astounding sophomore season for Coach Mike Miller at LACC. He averaged 16.1 points and six rebounds a game and led the team to a 27-4 record, an 8-2 conference record, a share of the league title and a final ranking of No. 5 in the California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCMBCA) poll. He was one of two players named the All-South Coast Conference North Division Player of the Year last season, and his play also garnered him first-team all-state honors as selected by the CCCMBCA.
He also was a teammate of current Golden Eagle Rashaad Carruth during the 2003-04 season and played for Coach Lorenzo Watkins at Indian Hills Community College, where he helped lead the Warriors to a final record of 22-9 and an appearance in the NJCAA Region XI Tournament. In that season, Cornwell averaged 8.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.
As a senior at Louisville Eastern High School, Cornwell earned second team all-state honors in Kentucky as selected by HoopScoop magazine.
Cornwell joins three players who signed with Southern Miss earlier this week, a group that includes Courtney Beasley of Bridgton (Maine) Academy, Travis Hall of Western Nebraska Community College and Kyle LaMonte of Marshalltown (Iowa) Community College. Craig Craft, a 6-foot-3 guard from Raleigh (Miss.) High School, was the lone signee during the early signing period in November.
