Softball Falls To Southeastern Louisiana
HAMMOND, La.? Despite a seventh inning rally that saw the team score two runs, the Southern Miss softball team dropped a 6-2 decision to Southeastern Louisiana Wednesday night.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 19-26 overall, while Southeastern Louisiana improves to 15-22. The Lady Eagles have now lost eight-consecutive games.
Southern Miss threatened to take the first lead of the game in the third, as Melissa Prouty reached on a fielding error by Lady Lion third baseman Amy Ford, and advanced to second on a single by Ashley Brenan. But the Lady Eagles would not score, as Jessica Huerta and Krystal Crooks popped out to end the inning.
Southeastern Louisiana took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the inning. Kelli Gautreau walked to start the inning, but was picked off at first by Lady Eagle catcher Allison Bullard to Danielle Martin at first base. Brooke Lockhart singled, and after a popout by Jenaye Zeringue, Michelle Lemons singled to center, advancing Lockhard to second. Both players would score on a double by Katie Szmergalski, and she would score on a bloop RBI single on the left field line, to give the Lady Lions a 3-0 advantage.
The Lady Lions added two runs in the fifth, thanks to a two-RBI double from Rebecca De La Garza.
Southeastern Louisiana added its final run in the sixth, as Zeringue?s RBI sacrifice fly scored Lisa Chapman, who reached on a fielding error by Lady Eagle centerfielder Jennifer Fox.
In the seventh, Charity Butler led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a double by Allison Bullard. Butler then scored on a RBI groundout by Martin, while Bullard scored on a groundout by Prouty, to make the final score.
Devin King (7-6) got the win for Southeastern Louisiana, allowing five hits and two runs, while striking out four.
Danielle Wymer (8-13) took the loss for Southern Miss, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits, six runs, five earned, while walking three and striking out four.
Southern Miss returns to action Saturday and Sunday, hosting Houston in a three-game Conference USA series. Game times are 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, with the series finale set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
