Softball Wins Series Finale Against Charlotte In 12 Innings

Ashley Brenan's RBI single gave Southern Miss a 1-0 victory over Charlotte today.

Danielle Wymer pitched the second shutout of her career today, striking out seven Lady 49ers.

HATTIESBURG, Miss.? Ashley Brenan?s RBI single in the bottom of the 12^th inning scored Jessica Huerta from second base, giving the Lady Eagles a 1-0 victory, Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Southern Miss improves to 12-9 overall, 2-1 in Conference USA play, while Charlotte drops to 8-10-1, 1-2, in the final meeting between the two teams in Conference USA regular-season action.

The game was a pitchers duel between Charlotte?s Kristen Bowen and Southern Miss' Danielle Wymer, as both pitchers took no-hitters into the seventh inning, but Charlotte?s Evan Miller and Southern Miss? Charity Butler broke up the respective no-hitters in the inning.

Charlotte?s J.J. McVay led off the eighth inning with a single and was pinch ran for by Becky Matthews. Matthews stole second and advanced to third on a RBI single from Jamie West, who was also pinch ran for, by Susan Matthews. Following a groundout to first base by Karianne Huffstetler that saw Matthews advance to second base on the play, Becky Matthews was caught in a run down and tagged out by Huerta along the third base line. Wymer escaped further trouble as Laurie Roycroft struck out to end the inning.

Southern Miss had its chance in the bottom of the inning, on the strength of back-to-back singles from Sue Logan and Huerta, as Logan advanced to third on Huerta?s single. But Bowen got Diane Hammes and Brenan to foul out to end the inning.

The Lady Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10^th inning. Melissa Prouty singled to start the inning, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Autman. Following a fly out by Logan, Huerta was hit by a pitch and Hammes walked, but Bowen again escaped trouble, getting Brenan to strike out to end the threat.

Southern Miss had another opportunity in the 11^th inning, as Davis was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Jennifer Fox advanced her to second on a single. Following a flyout by Butler, Prouty advanced Davis and Fox to third and second respectively, on a groundout to the pitcher. But Bowen recorded the final out of the inning, getting Autman to groundout.

But in the 12^th, the Lady Eagles got the game-winning run. Logan popped out to second to start the inning, followed by back-to-back singles from Huerta and Hammes. Brenan followed with a game-winning RBI single to right field that scored Huerta from second.

Wymer (3-5) finished with 12 innings pitched, a career-high, scattering four hits and seven strikeouts, with no walks, for the second shutout of her career. Bowen pitched 11.1 innings, allowed eight hits, one run, walked four and struck out two.

Huerta had two hits for Southern Miss, while Hammes, Brenan, Fox, Butler, Prouty and Logan each had one. Brenan had the game?s lone RBI.

McVay had two hits to lead Charlotte.

Southern Miss returns to action Thursday, Mar. 10, as they compete in the Speedline Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. The Lady Eagles will face Coastal Carolina on Mar. 10 1 p.m., Central Michigan and Pittsburgh on Mar. 11 at 11 and 1 p.m., respectively, Illinois on Mar. 12 at 10 a.m., with the championship rounds set for Mar. 13.
