Softball Drops Two To USF

With the losses, Southern Miss falls to 17-17 overall, 5-3 in Conference
In game one, USF jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, on a two-RBI double by Krista Holle, sacrifice fly by Sarah Watson and two-run home run by Christie Chapman.
Southern Miss got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning. Jessica Huerta doubled to start the inning, and scored on a RBI double by Ashley Davis.
The Lady Eagles made the score 5-2 in the third. Diane Hammes led off the inning with a double down the right field line, and scored on a RBI single up the middle by Charity Butler.
The team got closer with another run in the fourth, as Ashley Brenan recorded an inside the park home run, for her third home run of the season.
In the fifth, Southern Miss made the score 5-4, on a RBI single by Melissa Prouty that scored Hammes, who led off the inning with a single.
But the Lady Eagles could not get closer, as USF scored six runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Bree Spence (10-6) got the win for USF, pitching five innings, allowing 10 hits and four runs, while striking out one. Nichole Christensen pitched two innings of relief, allowing two hits, walking one and striking out three.
Danielle Wymer (7-10) too the loss for Southern Miss, allowing 15 hits, 13 runs, seven earned, walking five and striking out two.
In the second game, Kasey Cash (5-4) limited Southern Miss to only four hits, allowing one run, walking three and striking out three. Christensen pitched .2 innings in relief, walking one and striking out two.
USF took a 2-0 lead in the second, on RBI singles by Carly Griffin and Spence.
The Lady Bulls added three runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Southern Miss scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth, on a RBI double by Huerta that scored Brenan.
Krystal Crooks (9-4) took the loss for Southern Miss, allowing 14 hits, nine runs, six earned, walking two and striking out two.
On the day, Hammes and Allison Bullard each had three hits, while Hammes and Huerta each had two doubles.
The series finale between Southern Miss and USF is set for Saturday, at 11 a.m., at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
