Softball Falls In Doubleheader At Ole Miss
With the losses, Southern Miss falls to 14-15 on the season, and are under .500 for the first time this season. Ole Miss improves to 20-9.
In the first game, the Lady Rebels took a 5-0 lead in the first inning. After two quick outs in the first inning, Mary Jane Callahan reached on a fielder?s choice and scored on a triple by DeDe Justice. Chloe Kloezeman followed with a double that scored Justice. Kloezeman then scored on an inside the park home run in the left field corner by Vanessa Gibbs and Lauren Rowe followed her with a solo home run to center field that went over the fence off the glove of Diane Hammes, as Ole Miss took the early lead.
In the fourth, Southern Miss made the score 5-1. Jessica Huerta led off the inning with a hit and Diane Hammes reached on an error by Kloezeman. Jennifer Fox followed with a double to centerfield that scored Huerta, while Hammes was thrown out at the plate. The Lady Eagles loaded the bases, as Charity Butler walked and Melissa Prouty was hit by a pitch, but the Lady Eagles could not push any additional runs across the plate.
Huerta, Fox, Ashley Davis and Sue Logan each had hits for Southern Miss.
In bottom of the inning, Ole Miss put the game out of reach, scoring eight runs to win the first game 13-1.
In game two, Lady Rebel pitcher Callahan (8-4) limited Southern Miss to
only one hit, as Ole Miss claimed the doubleheader sweep, 4-0.
Ole Miss took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, on a RBI single by Justice that scored Callahan, who led off the inning with a double.
Ole Miss added two more runs in the fifth on a two-RBI single by Callahan.
The Lady Rebels added another run in the sixth, on a RBI single from Rebecca McIntire, taking a 4-0 lead after six innings of play.
The Lady Eagles? lone hit came in the fourth inning, a double from Hammes.
Krystal Crooks (8-3) took the loss for Southern Miss, scattering eight hits, four runs, one earned, walking two and striking out two.
