Softball Falls In Heartbreaker To Hofstra, 4-3
CLEARWATER, Fla.? Hofstra?s Kelly Morris RBI single scored Pam Dreslinski, as it defeated Southern Miss 4-3 in eight innings Sunday, on the final day of Speedline Tournament competition.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 14-13 on the season, while Hofstra improves to 8-8.
Southern Miss concludes Speedline Tournament competition with a 2-4 record.
With the international tiebreaker rule in effect in the eighth, Southern Miss went ahead 3-2 in the top of the inning, as Diane Hammes? RBI sacrifice fly scored Sue Logan from third.
But in the bottom of the inning, Morris? RBI single scored Dreslinski from third, as Hofstra claimed the victory.
Southern Miss took a 1-0 lead in the first. Jessica Huerta led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hammes. Huerta stole third and scored on a RBI single by Jennifer Fox.
Hofstra responded in the bottom of the inning, on a two run home run by Lisa Torres, to take a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Eagles tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth. With two outs, Charity Butler singled to right field, and Melissa Prouty followed with a walk. Danielle Martin reached on an fielding error by second baseman Lisa Wambold, that scored Butler from second.
Hofstra loaded the bases in the seventh, but Krystal Crooks struck out Ashley Lane to end the inning.
Crooks (8-2) took the loss for Southern Miss, scattering seven hits and four runs, three earned, while striking out two and walking one.
Adrienne Clark picked up the win for Hofstra, allowing five hits, three runs, one earned, walking one and striking out one.
Huerta, Fox, Charity Butler and Melissa Prouty each had hits for Southern Miss, while Hammes, Fox and Danielle Martin each had RBIs.
The Lady Eagles return to action this Thursday, Mar. 17, in a 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., doubleheader against Ole Miss. Southern Miss returns to Conference USA action this weekend, at Saint Louis.
