Softball Splits Two On Second Day Of Speedline Tournament

Ashley Brenan finished with four hits and five RBIs today.

CLEARWATER, Fla.? The Southern Miss softball team split two games today at the Speedline Tournament, dropping a 4-3 decision to Central Michigan in nine innings in the first game, before rebounding with a 12-5 victory over Pittsburgh in the afternoon.

With the split, Southern Miss is now 13-11 on the season.

In the first game, the Lady Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the second. Ashley Davis led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third, as Charity Butler reached on a throwing error by Central Michigan first baseman Chivon Kloepfer. Danielle Martin reached on a fielder?s choice that scored Davis, while Martin and Butler scored on a two-RBI double from Ashley Brenan.

In the fifth, Central Michigan tied the game at 3-3. Kloepher led off with a single and Karen Hohs reached on a throwing error by Brenan, allowing Kloepher to score. Following a fly out by Suzie Giroux, Amy Hudson had an RBi single that scored Hohs. Following a single by Christan Dhondt, Jacque Benedict reached on a fielder?s choice, as Hudson was out at third base. An RBI single by Lindsey Calme scored Brittany Fulks, who pinch ran for Dhondt.

In the sixth, Jennifer Fox led off with a walk and advanced to second on a RBI groundout by Ashley Davis. Butler then reached on a error by Hudson, followed by a single by Melissa Prouty, advancing Butler to third, but Fox was thrown out at home.

With the tiebreaker rule in effect, Butler reached third base on a wild pitch with one out, but Sue Logan and Brenan each grounded out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the inning, Hohs? RBI sacrifice bunt advanced Horvath to third, and she scored on a RBI single by Giroux.

Danielle Wymer (3-7) took the loss, despite pitching 3.2 innings of strong relief, allowing only one hit, two walks, while striking out four.

Amy Candioto got the win for Central Michigan, pitching five innings in relief, allowing only one hit, while striking out three.

In the second game, Southern Miss took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Brenan led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error by leftfielder Joey Scarf. Brenan advanced to third on a fly out to left field by Huerta and scored on a RBI single by Hammes. Hammes stole second and scored on a RBI double by Fox. Following a double by Davis that advanced Fox to third, Butler had an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Fox.

Pittsburgh responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning, on a RBI single by Heather Conner and a two-RBI double by Sheena Hellon.

Southern Miss added three more runs in the top of the fourth, on a two-RBI double by Huerta and RBI double from Fox.

The Lady Eagles added six more in the seventh, on a RBI single from Butler, a two-RBI double from Logan, and a three-run home run from Brenan.

Wymer (4-7) got the win for Southern Miss, pitching 4.2 innings of relief, allowing four hits and two runs, while walking two and striking out two. Meghan Bostick took the loss for Pittsburgh, allowing 11 hits, nine runs, while walking one and striking out seven.

On the day, Brenan finished with four hits and five RBIs, including a double and her second home run of the season, while Davis, Fox, Huerta and Butler each had three hits. Fox, Logan and Huerta each had two doubles.

Southern Miss returns to action on Saturday, in a 10 a.m., contest against Illinois. Live stats will not be available.
