Softball Falls To Coastal Carolina, 8-6

With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 12-10 overall, while Coastal Carolina improves to 8-8.
Southern Miss took a 3-0 lead in the first. Jessica Huerta led off with a walk and advanced to second on an infield single by Diane Hammes. Following a groundout by Jennifer Fox, Ashley Davis? RBI single scored Huerta from third. After a walk by Charity Butler and a strikeout by Melissa Prouty, Danielle Martin recorded her first career hit, a two-RBI single to right field that scored Hammes and Davis.
The Lady Eagles added another run in the second, on a RBI groundout by Huerta, that scored Ashley Brenan, who singled to start the inning.
Southern Miss made the score 6-0 in the third, on RBI singles from Martin and Brenan.
Coastal
The Lady Chantileers added two more runs in the fourth, on RBI hits from Lynee Hastings and Granger, making the score 6-3.
In the sixth, Coastal Carolina loaded the bases, as Kristina Sheppard scored on a fielding error by Sue Logan. Katey Allen scored on a RBI groundout by Delane Grainger, with the final runs of the inning coming off a three-RBI double from Allison Cantrell.
Danielle Wymer (3-6) took the loss for Southern Miss, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing eight hits, six earned, walked four and struck out seven.
Danyelle Gerdts (1-1) got the win for Coastal Carolina, pitching three innings in relief without allowing a hit, walking three and striking out two.
Martin finished with two hits and three RBI for Southern Miss, the first hits and RBIs of her career.
Southern Miss returns to action tomorrow, with an 11 a.m., contest against Central Michigan, before playing a 1 p.m., game against
