In the team?s 17-0 victory over the Lady Tigers in game two, the Lady Eagles hit a school-record seven doubles, while tying school records with 17 runs scored and 17 RBIs.
The two teams will meet for the 30th and 31st time on Wednesday, with the Lady Indians holding a 19-10 series advantage. Southern Miss has won three of the past four meetings and six of eight since the softball program was reinstated in 1999.
Southern Miss is currently hitting .521 as a team, with 28 runs, 25 hits, 11 doubles, 11 walks, 38 total bases and 24 RBIs. Jessica Huerta?s 1.000 batting average. Huerta finished her opening weekend with five hits, eight RBIs, three doubles, a triple, four runs scored and 10 total bases. Five of her RBIs came in the team?s 17-0 victory, which set a single-game, career-high. She also drew a walk, stole a base and was hit by a pitch.
Charity Butler also had a productive opening weekend, finishing with a .833 batting average.
Melissa Prouty, who joined the team as a walk-on and played in 27 games without an at-bat in 2004, had three official plate appearances, finishing with one hit, three RBIs, four runs scored and three walks.
Ashley Davis, Allison Bullard and Diane Hammes each had two doubles in the opening series.
