With 17 runs in the second game, Southern Miss tied a single-game record for the most runs in a game, marking the third time a Lady Eagle team has scored 17 runs in a game, the last coming against
The Lady Eagles also set a new school record in doubles in a game with seven in the second game, breaking the previous record of five, which was accomplished two times, the most recent against Alabama State (3/19/04).
Southern Miss starts its season 2-0, the first time it has started a season 2-0 since 2002. The Lady Eagles have now own a 4-0 series lead against the Lady Tigers.
?It was a good way to start the season,? Southern Miss Head Coach Gay McNutt said. ?I?m pleased with our effort. We pitched well and our hitting was also good.?
In game one, the Lady Eagles quickly took control of the game, with three runs in the first inning, giving starting pitcher Danielle Wymer all the support she would need.
The team added five runs in the third, on RBI hits from Charity Butler, Jessica Huerta and Ashley Brenan and added three runs in the fourth inning on a two-RBI double from Huerta and RBI hit from Diane Hammes.
Wymer pitched four innings, limiting
In the second contest, the game was scoreless until the Lady Eagles exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the third. The team added six runs in the fourth inning.
Jessica Saunier pitched three innings, allowing one hit while striking out three. Crooks pitched the final two innings, striking out three.
On the day, Huerta finished with five hits, including three for doubles and one for a triple, on her way to an eight RBI series.
Meca Ani, Ebony Stevenson and Kenya Smith each had one hit apiece for
Five Lady Eagles made their debuts today in a Golden Eagle uniform, including Crooks, Bullard, Jennifer Fox, Danielle Martin and Ashley Autman. Crooks pitched three innings and struck out five, Fox had a hit and RBI, while Autman scored two runs.
Southern Miss returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 9, in a doubleheader against Louisiana-Monroe. Game times are set for 3 and 5 p.m.
