Softball Defets Mercer, 5-1
Freshman pitcher Krystal Crooks pitched her fourth-consecutive complete game in four-straight starts today, to improve to 5-1 on the season. |
With the win, Southern Miss improves to 8-6 overall on the season.
The Lady Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, on a RBI groundout from Ashley Brenan.
Mercer tied the score at 1-1 in the third, on a solo home run from Tiffany Abbott.
But Southern Miss got a RBI single from Charity Butler in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead, giving pitcher Krystal Crooks all the run support she would need.
Crooks (5-1) got the win, pitched seven innings, scattering six hits, walked none and struck out one. It was her fourth-consecutive complete game, in her fourth-straight start.
Allison Bullard added a RBI sacrifice fly that scored Sue Logan in the sixth inning.
Southern Miss scored its final two runs in the seventh, on a RBI double from Brenan and a RBI sacrifice from Jennifer Fox.
Five Lady Eagles stole bases against Mercer, including two from Jessica Huerta, and one each from Diane Hammes,
Brenan finished the game with two RBIs, while
Southern Miss returns to action Saturday, with a 9 a.m., contest against Samford, and a 1 p.m., game against
