Softball Splits Two On Opening Day Of Mardi Gras Classic
MONROE,
With the split, Southern Miss is now 6-4 on the season.
In the first game, Louisiana-Monroe took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI hits from Heather Williams and Lindsay Taylor.
Southern Miss cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, on a solo home run from Ashley Brenan, her first of the year.
The Lady Indians took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth, on a RBI double from Heather Hanson, and took a 4-1 lead in the fifth on a solo home run from Lindsay Schafer.
The Lady Eagles cut the lead down to two runs, on a solo home run from Jessica Huerta in the bottom of the fifth, her first of the season.
Southern Miss capped its rally with three runs in the sixth, on a solo home run form Jennifer Fox, her second of the season, and RBI hits from Allison Bullard and Huerta.
Krystal Crooks (4-0) pitched seven innings, to record her second-consecutive complete game in her second consecutive start. She scattered seven hits, four runs, walked one and struck out one.
Huerta and Bullard finished the game with two hits, while Huerta had two RBIs. Schafer finished with two hits for Louisiana-Monroe (5-7).
In the nightcap, Southern Miss took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as Diane Hammes scored on a RBI from Ashley Davis.
But
Lady Spartan Carol Forbes pitched five innings of relief and did not allow a hit, while striking out five.
Jessica Saunier (1-2) took the loss for Southern Miss, scattering nine hits and allowing nine runs, while walking three and striking out six.
The Lady Eagles return to action Saturday, facing Louisiana Tech at 9 a.m., and Conference
