Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Louisiana-Monroe

With the split, Southern Miss stands 5-3 on the season, while Louisiana-Monroe falls to 5-5.
In the opening game, Louisiana-Monroe first inning 4-0 lead off a grand slam from Heather Williams.
In the second inning, the Lady Indians made the score 8-0, off a two-RBI home run from Lindsay Schafer and RBI doubles from Williams and Lindsay Taylor.
The Lady Eagles made the score 8-2 in the third, on a on a RBI single from Diane Hammes, while Ashley Brenan scored on an error by Indian catcher Williams.
Southern Miss scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded, a dropped fly ball by Indian left fielder Taylor cleared the bases, making the score 8-5.
The Lady Eagles had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to get the tying runs across.
Brenan led Southern Miss with three RBIs in the first game, while Hammes and Charity Butler each had two hits. Williams paced Louisiana-Monroe with five RBIs.
Danielle Lahr (3-1) got the win for Louisiana-Monroe, while Lindsay Rittenhouse earned the save. Jessica Saunier (1-1) took the loss for Southern Miss, lasting 1.1 innings, allowing five hits, six runs, five earned, walking two and striking out two. Danielle Wymer pitched 5.2 innings of relief, scattering five hits and two runs, while striking out six and walking two.
In the second game, freshman Krystal Crooks (3-0) pitched her first-career shutout in her first-career start, allowing only three hits, walking one and striking out four. It was also Southern Miss? first complete game and shutout of the season.
Southern Miss took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, on a RBI double from Charity Butler. The Lady Eagles scored the remainder of their runs in the fourth, on a RBI double from Jessica Huerta and RBI singles from Hammes and Ashley Davis.
Hammes and Davis led Southern Miss with two hits in game two. Davis now has a seven-game hitting streak.
Southern Miss will now travel to the Louisiana-Monroe hosted Mardi Gras Classic Feb. 18-20. The Lady Eagles will meet Louisiana-Monroe at 4 p.m., and
