HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Basketball Coach Larry Eustachy has announced the signing of Dewayne Green of Mt. San Jacinto (Calif.) College to a national letter of intent and grant-in-aid for the 2006-07 academic year. This marks the first signee of the early signing period.
"Dewayne will be a great addition to the Southern Miss basketball program," Eustachy said. "He is a true point guard who comes from a good junior college program in California. He has a good mental makeup for the game and is the type of player we need to be successful."
Green, a 5-foot-10, 155-pound native of Saginaw, Mich., is a standout point guard for Coach Patrick Springer at Mt. San Jacinto. As a freshman last season, he helped lead the Eagles to an 18-10 overall record, averaging 19.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 4.4 steals per game. Green earned All-Foothill Conference First Team honors and was an honorable mention all-state selection by the California Community Colleges Men's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCMBCA).
A preseason All-Foothill Conference honoree, Green was among the top junior college players in the state of California last season. He ranked in the top five in several categories in conference play, including scoring, 3-point shooting, assists and steals. Green also ranked in several state statistical categories, leading all players with a state-best steals per game average.
Mt. San Jacinto also was home to one of Eustachy's former players, Jamaal Tinsley, who was an All-American at Iowa State and now is a member of the NBA's Indiana Pacers.
Green is currently rated among the top 50 junior college players in the nation by JucoJunction.com. As a senior at Christian Faith Center in Creedmore, N.C., Green also was a three-star rated high school player by rivals.com and was listed among the top 100 prep school players by HoopScoop online.
