HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Basketball Coach Larry Eustachy has announced the signing of Gjio Bain of Northeastern Community College in Norfolk, Neb., to a national letter of intent and grant-in-aid for the 2006-07 academic year. This marks the second signee of the early signing period.
"Gjio is a extremely athletic big man who is going to bring a lot to our program," Eustachy said. "He is a young player who has a tremendous upside. He's a great shot blocker and a good defensive player, and he's been developing an offensive game. Gjio is a big prospect who really liked our past experiences in developing players, especially post players, for the next level."
Bain, a 6-foot-11, 230-pound native of Nassau, Bahamas, is a standout center for Coach Dan Anderson at Northeast (Neb.) Community College. He helped lead the team to an 18-13 overall record and an appearance in the NJCAA Region IX Tournament, averaging 10 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks per game. He also earned the Top Academic Freshman award and was named all-conference and an Omaha World Herald Honorable Mention recipient.
A preseason Junior College All-American as selected by Basketball Times, Bain received a two-star rating by Scout.com. He also was rated among the top 40 junior college players in the nation by JucoJunction.com. He attended C.I. Gibson High School in Nassau and played for Coach Kevin Johnson.
Bain, who chose Southern Miss over Pittsburgh and other schools, is the second signee of the early signing period, joining Dewayne Green of Mt. San Jacinto (Calif.) College, who signed with Southern Miss on Wednesday.
