Throughout the 2005 Golden Eagle football season, a player from the offense, defense and special teams will sit down for an interview with Southern Miss Athletics Media intern Mallory Haynes on what you need to know about Southern Miss football.
This week?s spotlight focuses on wide receiver Antwon Courington, linebacker Kevis Coley, and punt returner Jasper Faulk.
Making big plays with Antwon Courington
Being the team?s leading receiver this year, what goes through your mind as soon as the ball touches your hands?
?Make a play.?
What does it mean to you to be a golden eagle?
?It means everything. It means you work hard; it means that you put your body through more than it can really handle. You just get done what you can.?
What is your pre-game ritual?
?I just like to sit around, be quiet, and listen to some Lil?
You just posted your second career 100-yard receiving performance last week against
?It really didn?t seem like I had that many. I guess it came off of that one long play, but I just had to make a play. When the chance came, I was able to make a couple of more yards on that play.?
Which opponent do you look forward to playing the most?
?
What is the funniest thing an opponent has said to you during a game in order to psyche you out?
?Nobody has really ever said anything. I mean, once they get a little bit of me they always try to suck up to me a little bit so I will take it easy on them next time.?
Are you addicted to facebook.com?
?Yes, I am. It has lowered my GPA.?
Kevis Coley: Fast and Physical!
Being a senior this year, what kind of expectations do you have for this season?
?The first expectation that I think of is to win a conference championship. We come out every day and practice hard. As a senior, I?d like to leave here with my fellow seniors with a championship.?
What makes you such a vicious hitter?
?I?ve always played the game of football fast and physical since I was little, and in high school. That?s the only way it can be played. It?s a game of contact and physical ability. So I just come out and try to be the aggressor on the field.?
What do you admire most about your twin brother Trevis?
?Well, he?s my brother, and I love him to death. We have been through a lot?well, everything?together growing up and everything. We stick together like?I don?t know what. I love him, and he is my twin brother. We talk about a lot of things in life, and mostly about football. You know, I just love him.?
Do you have a fantasy football team?
?No.?
If you did what would your team name be?
?I don?t know.?
If you could model yourself after any one of USM?s coaches, who would it be and why?
?My linebacker coach, Coach Pollard. He?s a cool and funny guy. He?s taught me a lot about football, so I would have to say Coach Pollard.?
What is your favorite television show to watch?
?ESPN.?
Do you have a nickname?
?Some coaches call me ?Pit-bull,? and one of my teammates calls all of the backers the ?proud boys.? There?s all kinds of nicknames.?
What is your favorite part or aspect of a football game?
?Coming out and playing physical. Playing defense and playing physical. Being the middle linebacker, I?ve got to make all of the checks and calls, so I get to be the lead on defense.?
Jasper Faulk: It runs in the family!
This year you are expected to step up and be a major contributor to the team. How have you prepared yourself for a bigger role?
?I come out for my teammates and try to be a leader. A lot of times certain players step up that really haven?t had a lot of playing time, and they don?t know what to expect. But I have a mind set of going out there and making plays and making things happen.?
Who do you look up to as an athlete whether they are collegiate or professional?
?As an athlete I would have to say my uncle, who plays linebacker for the Rams. He has taught me a lot growing up and playing the game of football. So if it would be anybody it would be him.?
If I were to get in your car right now and turn on the radio or CD player what music would be playing?
?Probably just the radio. I have all my CDs in my room.?
What kind of music do you like?
?I listen to all kinds of music.?
In your opinion, what makes a good football player?
?Work ethic. I think a lot of times that players can be coached to do certain things, but a coach cannot coach work ethic and cannot coach how much effort a player gives.?
What sports do you like to play and watch besides football?
?Track and field is probably my next favorite sport.?
What do you think is the greatest sports movie of all time?
?Wow, there?s a lot of them out there. I have a lot of favorites like Any Given Sunday, Rudy, Friday Night Lights, Remember the Titans.?
How do you feel about your performance so far this season?
?Personally, I?m not satisfied because I believe that I can go out there and do a whole lot better. My mind set is to get better each and every day and just go out there and make things happen.?
What do you plan to change and improve for the remainder of the season?
?Focus on what my game is. On game day, focus on what it is I need to do to help this team get a victory.?
