With the win, Southern Miss took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, taking its opening drive down field in an 11-play, 52-yard drive that culminated with a Darren McCaleb 27-yard field goal. McCaleb has now made seven field goals in a row, after missing his first attempt of the season at The Golden Eagles made the score 10-0, as Jasper Faulk returned a interception 49-yard for a touchdown, the first of his career. It was the second time a Golden Eagle has returned an interception for a touchdown this season, matching Gerald McRath?s 32-yarder against Tulsa made the halftime score 10-7, as the Golden Hurricane used a 15-play, 98-yard drive that took 7:46 off the clock, as Garrett Mills scored on a three-yard touchdown reception from Paul Smith.
