October 26, 2005: 13th Entry - On the team's win against UAB, the upcoming game against N.C. State and how teammates have reacted to their "Twin Perspective":
Kevis: "We played well against UAB and contained (UAB quarterback Darrell) Hackney in the first half. In the second half, he got into a rhythm and beat us on some deep passes. But overall, as a defense, we played well."
Trevis: "Though we played well in the first half, we didn't play well in the second. We have to play better in the second half of games. UAB came out in the second half with good adjustments and made it a game. We had Hackney contained for awhile, but he was able to get loose and make some plays later in the game. We did do better stopping the run against UAB, which is something that we've been wanting to do better. Now we have to work on stopping the pass."
Kevis: "We weren't worried when they began to mount a comeback in the second half. We have to have a `killer instinct' on defense, in that once we get a team down, we have to keep them down. Hackney is a good quarterback; and good quarterbacks are going to make plays. We must make improvements on our passing defense and play better this week against NC State."
Trevis: "I knew that they were going to make a run in the second half, after we put 17 points up against them in the first half. I figured that they would throw the ball more in the second half since we shut down the run. When they did come out, it was a lot of quick, three-step passes by the quarterback. We weren't able to stop some of those passes, and they turned out to be big plays for them. But luckily, we were able to finish the game strong and get the win."
Kevis: "We had a decent fan turnout in Birmingham, considering it was a Friday night. Whenever we're on the road, we have to create our own enthusiasm, but it was good to have the fans there that we did have."
Trevis: "It was good to have fans there to support us, but when you go on the road you can't expect a big crowd for your team. So we had to feed off of each other and play as hard as we could."
Kevis: "My brother finally beat me in leading the team in tackles (Trevis - 9, Kevis - 7). So I was a little frustrated because I didn't get as many opportunities to make that many tackles. I made some plays with two third down stops, but once they started passing, it took me out of the game. I guess I'll have to double-up in tackles in the next game."
Trevis: "Kevis isn't making excuses, but hopefully I'll be able to continue to make more tackles. I guess he got a taste of what I felt last week against UCF, when I only had three tackles and was frustrated like he was against UAB, because nothing came my way. He got a little taste of the medicine that I felt last week."
Kevis: "I'm excited about playing against N.C. State. I've heard that they're a good team. With it being an ACC team, I'm sure that they're going to have a big crowd up there and will probably be another hostile environment to play in."
Trevis: "It's always good to play competition of the caliber of an ACC school. They're 2-4, but we can't let that record fool us, because they're a good team. We're going to their place, probably under a hostile crowd, and we're going to play our style of football."
Kevis: "Regardless of what the weather's going to be when we go out there, we have to adjust to it, make no excuses and play Southern Miss football. It's probably going to be cold up there, but we'll have our sweats and long sleeves on so we'll be able to adjust to it. Once we get out there for the pre-game warm up, get a good sweat going and the adrenaline flowing, we'll be ready to play football."
Trevis: "Our motto is anyone, anywhere, anytime, so we can't think about the weather. We're going to be prepared for the cold with our equipment, so we'll have to adjust to it."
Kevis: "Since we've been doing this `Twin Perspectives' over this season, we've had some reactions by our teammates. When we first started, guys on the team told us that they liked it and kept up with it. Some guys, who we call `haters', come up and try to make fun of it, but overall the team likes what we have to say."
Trevis: "I've heard a couple of guys that read it say that they couldn't believe that we'd say some of the stuff that they see on it. We tease about it, and joke about it a little bit, but it's a good thing overall."
