Basketball Opens Preseason Practice Friday HATTIESBURG, Miss.
The time change comes with the enactment of a new rule by the NCAA, allowing basketball programs to start preseason workouts at 7 p.m., on the Friday nearest Oct. 15. The previous rule allowed for practice sessions to begin on the Saturday nearest Oct. 15, beginning at midnight.
The Golden Eagles will hold the first practice at Hattiesburg High's gymnasium due to repairs currently being done to Reed Green Coliseum from effects suffered following Hurricane Katrina. These temporary repairs will be completed in time for Southern Miss' 2005-06 exhibition opener against Calgary on Nov. 6.
The team also will practice at the off-campus location on Saturday and Sunday, with sessions beginning at 9 a.m., and 2 p.m., respectively.
Southern Miss returns four players from last season's 11-17 team, including seniors Jason Forte and Tyler Quinn, and juniors Mildon Ambres and Jarekus Singleton. The roster also features a strong group of newcomers, including Courtney Beasley (6-3, Fr., guard), David Cornwell (6-8, Jr., forward), Craig Craft (6-3, Fr., guard), Travis Hall (5-10, Jr., guard), Kyle Lamonte (6-3, Jr., guard), Kendaris Pelton (6-6, Jr., forward), Shaun Simpson (6-8, Jr., forward) and Donatas Visockis (6-10, Fr., center).
Tickets for the fast-approaching season may be purchased at the Southern Miss Athletic Ticket Office, located in the Ferlise Center on West Fourth Street, or by calling 1-800-844-TICK or 601-266-5418.
