Basketball Hits Road Again, Set To Face Memphis on Sunday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss travels to Memphis, Tenn., to take on the University of Memphis, Sunday, at the FedExForum.
The game is set for a 7 p.m., Sunday, night contest and will be televised locally in the Memphis area by WLMT/UPN 30 with Greg Gaston and Hank McDowell calling the action.
The Golden Eagles (9-4, 0-1 in Conference USA) enter the game following a 83-75 loss in the league opener against UAB on Wednesday. The Tigers (7-7, 0-0) also lost in their last outing, falling 74-67 on the road against Texas. Sunday's game marks the first C-USA game for Memphis.
Jasper Johnson remains the scoring and rebounding leader for Southern Miss with 17.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Jarekus Singleton follows with 11.9 points and has 4.3 boards per game, while Rashaad Carruth stands at 10.7 points per game. Michael Ford leads the team with 41 assists on the season.
Memphis enters the game with an overall record of 7-7 on the season following Thursday's 74-67 loss at Texas. Rodney Carney currently leads the Tigers in scoring with 16.6 points per game and is averaging 6.2 rebounds a night. Sean Banks follows closely with 16.3 points a game and 6.5 rebounds per outing. Darius Washington also is averaging double figures with 13.1. Joey Dorsey leads all players with 7.2 rebounds per game, and Washington leads the team with 45 assists.
The games marks the 71st meeting in the all-time series, with the Tigers holding a 47-23 advantage. The two teams have split games each of the last two seasons, with the home team winning each game during the span.
The contest will be broadcast over the Southern Miss/ISP Sports Network. "The Voice of the Golden Eagles" John Cox and Lance Pittman will call the action. Air time begins at 6:30 p.m., CT, with the Golden Eagle Courtside Show.
Following the game, Southern Miss returns home to host No. 16 Louisville in a game that will be televised nationally by ESPN2. Tip-off for the contest is set for 6 p.m., on Tuesday. Prior to that game, the Department of Athletics and the Alumni Association will hold a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony for the new designated basketball tailgating area -- Nitchampburg. The ceremony begins at 5 p.m., and free food by Mugshots and refreshments by Coke will be provided.
