Basketball Opens Conference USA Action On Road At UAB
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss begins Conference USA play for the 2004-05 season on the road against UAB, Wednesday, in Birmingham.
Tip-off for the contest is set for 8 p.m., CT. The game will be televised on Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast network with Matt Stewart and Sonny Smith calling the action. The game will be carried on Channel 25 on the Comcast Cable network in the Hattiesburg area. For other stations carrying the game, check with your local cable provider.
The Golden Eagles, playing in their first season under Head Coach Larry Eustachy, enter the game after dropping a 67-56 decision on the road at New Orleans on Thursday. Prior to that game, Southern Miss (9-3) had won six in a row.
Jasper Johnson maintains his lead among Southern Miss scorers and rebounders with averages of 17.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Jarekus Singleton is adding 12.0 points and 4.3 rebounds a game, while Rashaad Carruth also is in double figures with 10.2 points a game.
UAB enters the game on a four-game win streak, one that includes a 100-80 win over Murray State on Sunday. The Blazers, a 2004 Sweet 16 participant, are 10-3 on the season, the third under Head Coach Mike Anderson.
Donnell Taylor leads the team with 15.9 points per game and is second on the team with 4.9 rebounds a night. Ronnell Taylor is second with a 12.4 point average, while Demario Eddins and Marvett Lewis are averaging 11.2 and 10.2 points per game, respectively. Carldell Johnson leads all players with 64 assists this season, and Eddins is high with 5.1 rebounds a game.
The two teams have met a combined 21 times before, with UAB holding the 13-8 advantage. UAB won last year's meeting, 69-65.
The contest will be broadcast over the Southern Miss/ISP Sports Network. "The Voice of the Golden Eagles" John Cox and Lance Pittman will call the action. Air time begins at 7:30 p.m., CT, with the Golden Eagle Courtside Show.
Following the game, Southern Miss continues league play on the road, travelling to Memphis, Tenn., to take on the Memphis Tigers. Game time for that contest is set for 7 p.m., Sunday.
