Basketball Resumes Road Play, Faces Houston On Saturday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- After a short stay in Hattiesburg, the Southern Miss basketball team takes to the road again, this time traveling to Houston, Texas, to take on the University of Houston.
Tip-off for the game is set for 7 p.m., Saturday, at Houston's Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Golden Eagles, who have a 9-6 overall record and 0-3 mark in league play under first-year Head Coach Larry Eustachy, fell to nationally ranked Louisville 107-62, on Tuesday. In the game, Rashaad Carruth paced the team with a career-high 25 points, while Michael Ford and Mildon Ambres both scored in double-figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Jasper Johnson still ranks as the top scorer on the team, leading with 15.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Carruth follows closely with 11.3 points a night, while Jarekus Singleton adds 10.8 points per outing. Ford leads all players with 46 assists.
Houston comes into the game with a 10-6 overall record and 1-1 mark in league play. The Cougars, under the direction of first-year Head Coach Tom Penders, recently defeated Centenary, 93-82, on Tuesday and fell 68-57 last Saturday against DePaul. The team's only win in league play was a 70-67 upset over Louisville on Jan. 5. Andre Owens leads the team with 18.1 points per game, while ranking second on the team with 4.7 boards per game. Lanny Smith currently is averaging 14.4 points and has a team-best 64 assists on the season. Ramon Dyer, who has a team-best 5.6 rebounds per game, is third with an average of 10.3 points.
The game is the 22nd overall in the all-time series between the two schools. Southern Miss, which has won each of the last two meetings, owns a slight 11-10 edge in the series.
The contest will be broadcast over the Southern Miss/ISP Sports Network. "The Voice of the Golden Eagles" John Cox will call the action. Air time begins at 6:30 p.m., CT, with the Golden Eagle Courtside Show.
Following the Houston game, Southern Miss returns to Hattiesburg to host a four-game homestand, beginning with Wednesday's contest against Saint Louis. The team then hosts Tulane on Jan. 22 and has DePaul coming to town on Jan. 29. A visit from USF on Feb. 2 rounds out the home stretch.
