Golden Eagle Football Players Report Sunday HATTIESBURG, Miss.
Due to changes in the NCAA football preseason and reporting guidelines that were enacted last season, both the first-year players and the returnees will report on Sunday.
All players will check in between 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., Sunday, and will then attend a full squad meeting at 4 p.m.
While the players all report at the same time, the first-year players will practice on their own for the first few days. All first-year player practices will run from 7:30 a.m., through 9 a.m., each day, beginning on Monday and ending on Thursday.
During the first week of practice, the varsity players will attend weightlifting sessions while the first-year players practice, and then the two groups will flip-flop during the second session of each day, beginning at 9:30 a.m., until 11:30 a.m. When the varsity players run through their workouts, and the first-year players will go through various orientation meetings.
The first full practice for all players is scheduled for Friday, beginning at 9 a.m. Two-a-days begin on Saturday, Aug. 14, with practices scheduled for 7:35 a.m., and 3:55 p.m. Current NCAA regulations also mandate that two-a-day workouts may not be held on consecutive days. All practices are closed to the public.
The Ninth Annual Golden Eagle Fanfare, sponsored by the Southern Miss South Central Mississippi Alumni Chapter, the Hattiesburg American and other sponsors, will be held Saturday, August 14, at the Southern Miss Payne Center. Dinner will be served from 6-7 p.m., during which time there will also be a silent auction and then the program will begin at 7 p.m.
Admission for the event is $15 in advance for adults, and $18 at the door. Tickets for children 6-12 are $8 in advance, $10 at the door. Children under 6 will be admitted for free. Proceeds from the event are used by the South Central Mississippi Alumni Chapter to fund scholarships for high school students planning to attend Southern Miss.
Tickets can be purchased at the Ogletree Alumni House (266-5013), the Pat Ferlise Center (266-5418), or from members of the South Central Mississippi Alumni Chapter Board.
Media Day will be held on Sunday, Aug. 15, at M.M. Roberts Stadium and the Athletic Center and is open only to the media.
Southern Miss opens the season on Sept. 11, when the Golden Eagles travel to Lincoln, Neb., to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers at 11 a.m., CT.
