Boyd Named Conference USA Hitter Of The Week
Sarah Boyd |
HATTIESBURG, Miss.
? Southern Miss senior designated player Sarah Boyd has been named as the Conference USA Hitter of the Week for the period ending May 3.
Boyd was instrumental in the Lady Eagles' three-game sweep over East Carolina last weekend, helping propel Southern Miss into second place in the league standings behind Louisville.
The Mandeville, La., native batted 4-for-11 for the week, reeling off a double and two home runs, while scoring four runs and posting four RBIs in just three games. In the first game of the series, Boyd smashed a solo home run to tie the game and force the game into extra innings. Boyd also had key hits in Sunday's win with an RBI double to tie the game in the sixth and then a two-run homer to seal the win in the seventh. She also finished the week with 11 total bases, a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .417 on-base percentage.
Louisville pitcher Aja Sherman was named the league's Pitcher of the Week. The Las Vegas, Nev., native registered her third no-hitter of the year in Louisville's 1-0 win over Evansville last Tuesday. Only three other players in league history have thrown as many no-hitters in a single season. It also marked the fourth of her career. During the contest, Sherman struck 11 to match a career-high. The shutout marked the 16th for U of L, a program record.
This marks the third overall, second in a row, Hitter of the Week award for a Southern Miss player this season. Auriel Jenkins was named the league's Hitter of the Week on March 28, while Ashley Brenan was selected as a Co-Hitter of the Week last week (April 26).
The Lady Eagles host the league-leading Cardinals in a three-game series this weekend, one that will determine the 2004 C-USA regular season champion. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m., while Sunday's single game also will begin at 1 p.m.
