Golden Eagle Basketball Signs Solomon Brown

HATTIESBURG, Miss.
? Southern Miss Head Basketball Coach Larry Eustachy has announced the signing of Solomon Brown, a 6-2, 175-pound point guard from Los Angeles City College in Los Angeles, Calif., to a national letter of intent for the 2004-05 academic year. This marks the fifth signee of the spring signing period.
Brown was a standout player for Coach Mike Miller at Los Angeles CC, where he helped lead the Cubs to an overall record of 28-3 and an appearance in the 2004 California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics Men's Basketball Championships Southern California regional finals. During the season, the Cubs captured their 11th South Coast Conference Championship. Los Angeles CC entered the preseason as the No. 4 junior college team in the nation as selected by Street and Smith.
"Of all the players we signed, Solomon is the truest point guard," Eustachy said. "He started his freshman year at Iona, and is a really solid player with a lot of upside. Solomon will be a solid contributor to our program."
During the 2003-2004 campaign, Brown ranked among the top players in California in both assists and steals, averaging 5.1 assists and 1.9 steals per game. The guard from Anaheim, Calif., was listed as a Honorable Mention South Coast Conference-North Division player by JCHoops.com and was selected as a Top 100 California Juco player by the same web site.
After a successful senior season at St. Thomas More Prep School in Connecticut -- where he averaged 17 points and seven assists per game -- Brown played as a freshman at Iona College in New York. While as a freshman at Iona, he played in 30 games, starting 22 of them, and scored 235 points to go along with 115 assists and 39 steals.
Brown is the sixth signee for the 2004 Southern Miss signing class. The Golden Eagles signed Henry Salter (Gulfport, Miss.), a 6-foot-4 forward from Gulfport High School, during the fall signing period. In the spring period, the program also signed Rashaad Carruth (College Park, Ga.), a 6-foot-3 guard from Indian Hills Community College; Shakiem Mitchell (Brooklyn, N.Y.), a 6-foot-9 forward/center from the Globe Institute of Technology; Dwayne Brown (Kingston, Jamaica), a 6-foot-8 forward from Southeastern Illinois Community College; and Michael Ford (Macon, Ga.), a 6-foot-1 guard from Los Angeles Southwest College.
