Brenan Named Conference USA Co-Hitter Of The Week
Ashley Brenan |
HATTIESBURG, Miss.
? Southern Miss sophomore third baseman Ashley Brenan has been named as a Conference USA Co-Hitter of the Week for the period ending April 26.
Brenan helped lead the Lady Eagles to a 2-1 record over the week, including a 2-0 series sweep over defending C-USA champion DePaul at home.
The Spring, Texas, native hit safely in each game last week. In the nightcap of the doubleheader against DePaul, the sophomore went 2-for-4 with two runs, four RBI and ended the game with a walk-off homer. Over three games, including a matchup against No. 2 LSU, Brenan went 4-for-11 and posted three runs, five RBIs, while connecting on two longballs.
Brenan currently leads the Lady Eagles with 13 doubles and 27 RBIs, while also ranking third in hits (44) and tied for fourth in home runs (4).
This marks the second such award for a Southern Miss player this season, coupled with Auriel Jenkins' selection as Hitter of the Week for the period ending on March 28.
Along with Brenan, Louisville's Shannon Nord also was named as a Co-Hitter of the Week, while fellow Cardinals Aja Sherman was selected as the Pitcher of the Week.
Nord led Louisville to a 3-1 mark, including a league sweep over Charlotte, as she hit .462. The senior collected three stolen bases and struck out just once over the four contests. In game one against the 49ers, Nord went 2-for-2, with two runs, two RBIs and a double. She is now No. 2 on U of L's list for career stolen bases with 36.
Sherman posted Louisville's first perfect game in the Cardinals' 8-0 five-inning win over Charlotte. She retired all 15 batters she faced, while striking out six. The feat marked her second no-hitter of the season and the third of her career. Sherman also posted a win in the series finale over the 49ers. Over 12.0 innings pitched, Sherman held a 0.58 ERA, allowed one run, no extra-base hits, and limited her opponents to a .122 batting average. She is a perfect 10-0 in conference action this season.
Southern Miss (26-22, 13-4 C-USA) enters the final two weekends of the regular season with a three-game series at East Carolina, Saturday and Sunday, in Greenville, N.C.
