CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Southern Miss managed just one run off six hits, falling 4-1 in the final session of the three-game Conference USA weekend series at Charlotte, Sunday at the Phillips Sports Complex.
The Lady Eagles (24-21, 11-4 in C-USA) gave up two runs in each of the first two innings and couldn't get past the 49ers (18-20, 4-11) in the finale.
Senior pitcher Danielle Hatfield (4-5) took the loss after pitching 1.2 innings and allowing four runs on five hits with two walks. Jessica Holaway pitched the final 4.1 innings, giving up just two hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Charlotte's Christy Murray (9-9) picked up the complete-game win after tossing seven innings with one run on six hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
In the two-run first, Sam Moore ripped her first of two doubles to bring home Denise Atmar and then scored on Autumn Lawson's RBI single to put Charlotte up 2-0.
In the second, Southern Miss cut the lead to one when Sue Logan's suicide squeeze plated Auriel Jenkins, who had doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt.
In the 49ers second, consecutive two-out singles by Jessica Moore, Becky Matthews and Atmar produced two runs, with Matthews and Atmar picking up RBIs to end the scoring.
