Lady Eagle Softball Falls To Southeastern La., 3-1
HAMMOND, La. -- Southern Miss saw its four-game win streak snapped, Wednesday, with a 3-1 loss to Southeastern Louisiana in non-conference softball action at the North Oak Park.
The Lady Eagles (18-18) out-hit the Lions 7-6 but managed just one run in the game, stranding seven runners on base. Southeastern (16-17) came up with three runs, two on a Karin Smith home run. Both teams committed one error.
Summer Delaneuville (12-6) picked up the complete-game victory for the Lions, finishing with six strikeouts and just one walk. Jessica Saunier (2-5) took the loss for Southern Miss after allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 3.1 innings of work. Jessica Holaway pitched 2.2 innings in relief, allowing just one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.
The Lions struck first with a pair of quick runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sarah Gascon led off with a single and advanced to second on Michelle Lemons' groundout. Smith then smashed a two-run shot over right center field to give Southeastern the 2-0 lead.
The hosts then added to that lead with a single run in the fourth inning, taking advantage of three hits and one Southern Miss error. Rebecca de la Garza reached on a single, moved to second on a single by Kelly Gautreau and then to third on the error. Two hitters later Katie Szmergalski lined an RBI single up the middle to push de la Garza across.
Southern Miss threatened to cut into the deficit in the top of the sixth, as both Jessica Huerta and Sarah Boyd reached on singles to put two runners on with one out. But that would be where the runners would stay as Delaneuville forced the Lady Eagles into consecutive fly-outs to end the threat.
The Lady Eagles had a final shot in the top of the seventh and were in position to put some runs on the board. Sue Logan reached on an error and moved to second on Charity Butler's single to center field. The two runners advanced on a wild pitch to get into scoring position. But only Logan eventually came home, scoring on Ashley Brenan's sacrifice fly to left field.
Boyd and Butler each finished with two hits to lead Southern Miss, while six different players registered hits for the Lions.
The Lady Eagles return home to host UAB in a three-game Conference USA series. The two teams meet in a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m. and 3 p.m.) and play in a single game on Sunday (1 p.m.).
