Southern Miss Softball Visits Houston For Third League Series HATTIESBURG, Miss. --
The Lady Eagles (15-17, 3-3 in Conference USA) face the Cougars (24-11, 3-0) in a three-game series, with two games scheduled for Saturday (1 p.m. and 3 p.m.) and a single game slated for Sunday (1 p.m.). All three games will feature a live stats broadcast on SouthernMiss.com.
Southern Miss enters the series following the shutout victory over the Bulldogs in Hattiesburg. In the game, the Lady Eagles scored four runs in the first inning and cruised to the 6-0 victory. Three of the runs came courtesy of Auriel Jenkins' monster home run to left field, and senior pitcher Jessica Holaway (6-5) scattered four hits in complete game.
Sophomore first baseman Ashley Davis and junior leftfielder Diane Hammes continue to lead the team in batting, each sporting a .326 average and a team-best 31 hits. Davis leads all players with 18 RBIs, while Hammes holds on to a nine-game hitting streak and is second in both home runs (3) and RBIs (16). Jenkins follows with a .315 batting average and is second in runs scored with 17. Sophomore third baseman Ashley Brenan is third overall with 29 hits, while senior designated player Sarah Boyd is tops with four home runs.
Holaway has a team-high 19 appearances for a 6-5 record with one save in 88.1 innings of work. Holaway also holds a team-best 3.41 ERA, 22 walks and 52 strikeouts. Senior Danielle Hatfield remains on top with a 3.58 ERA, while also sporting a 4-3 record and 30 strikeouts. Sophomore Danielle Wymer has a 3-5 mark, 16 strikeouts and a 7.32 ERA, while freshman Jessica Saunier holds a 2-4 record, 16 strikeouts and a 7.25 ERA.
For the Cougars, Kim Nesloney and Kristen Glowacz both have a team-best .315 batting average and have 35 and 34 hits, respectively. Glowacz is tops in RBIs with 23 and is second in home runs with five. Arelis Ferreris leads the team with seven home runs. Jenny Johnson has the most appearances for Houston in the circle, holding on to a 9-4 record with eight saves in 96 innings pitched. She also has a team-best ERA of 0.51 and has 91 strikeouts. Crystal Briscoe follows with a 6-5 record and 68 strikeouts.
Following the three-game weekend series, the Lady Eagles visit Southeastern Louisiana for a single game in Hammond, La., on Wednesday, March 31.
