Win Streak Snaps With Softball Loss To LSU
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss saw its five-game win streak come to an end, Wednesday, with an 8-0 loss to No. 4 LSU at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
The Lady Eagles (11-13) dropped the midweek game after managing just three hits and making one error. The Lady Tigers (23-4) reeled off eight runs on 12 hits in the game and also committed an error in picking up the run-rule win.
LSU scored runs in all but one inning, including a big, four-run fifth that included Lauren Delahoussaye's three-run home run to left field. The Lady Tigers notched singles in the first and second and added two more in the third before going scoreless in the fourth.
Southern Miss stayed within striking distance through the first four innings and had possibly its best opportunity to push a run across in the bottom of the fourth. Diane Hammes led off with a single and advanced to batters later on Auriel Jenkins' single to left field. But that would be as far as the Lady Eagles would get.
Kristin Schmidt (13-2) picked up the complete-game victory, allowing just three hits and striking out seven in five innings of work.
Jessica Holaway (4-4) suffered the loss, giving up eight runs, seven earned, on 12 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Along with Hammes and Jenkins, Charity Butler also added a hit for Southern Miss.
For LSU, Lauren Castle picked up three hits, while LaDonia Hughes and Leslie Klein both added two hits.
Southern Miss now takes a six-day break before hosting Ole Miss on Tuesday, March 16 and Louisiana Tech on Thursday, March 18. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
