Southern Miss Falls In Day Two Of Aggie Invitational
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Southern Miss softball team continued its misfortune in the St. Joseph's Aggie II Invitational, dropping games to 17th-ranked Oregon and Penn State, Saturday, in day two of the three-day event.
The Lady Eagles fell to 5-11 overall with the losses, which included a 12-1 decision to the Ducks and an 8-4 defeat to the Nittany Lions.
Southern Miss wraps up tournament play on Sunday, facing host Texas A&M in the final contest of the invitational tournament. First pitch is set for noon.
Oregon (11-4) reeled off 12 runs on 15 hits and committed one error in the opening-game win, while the Lady Eagles managed just one run on five hits and also had one error.
Six Ducks finished the game with two hits, anchored by Ann Marie Topps three-run home run. Jenn Poore and Beth Boskovich also added two RBIs and one home run, while Kayleen Hudson had two hits and two RBIs.
Amy Harris (1-0) picked up the win, finishing with nine strikeouts and just two walks in the complete, six-inning game.
For Southern Miss, Heather Bell put the lone run on the board with a solo blast in the third inning.
Jessica Holaway (2-3) took the loss after throwing five innings and giving up six runs, five earned on eight hits with one strikeout and three walks. Jessica Saunier threw one inning in relief, giving up six runs on seven hits with one strikeout.
In the second game, the Nittany Lions (1-7) used a four-run fifth inning and held off a late Southern Miss rally to pick up their first win of the season. Five players picked up two hits in the game including Kate Gentile's three-run double. Natasha Chouinard also had a two-run home run, while Leigh Murray chipped in with a home run of her own.
Diane Hammes led the Lady Eagles with three RBIs, one on a sacrifice fly in the first inning and the others on a two-run shot in the seventh frame. Ashley Brenan picked up a team-high two hits, including her RBI-double in the seventh.
Missy Beseres (1-3) picked up the victory after scattering eight hits for just four runs and 10 strikeouts in the complete-game victory.
Danielle Wymer (0-4) took the game two loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits with four walks in 4.2 innings in the circle. Danielle Hatfield pitched the final 2.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits with one strikeout.
