LSU Tops Southern Miss Softball In Title Game
BATON ROUGE, La. -- Nationally-ranked LSU scored runs in all but one inning to top Southern Miss, 13-2, in the championship game of the 2004 Purple and Gold Challenge, Sunday, at Tiger Park.
The 13th-ranked Lady Tigers (12-3) scored 13 runs on 18 hits and benefitted from four Southern Miss errors to win the championship game and finish the event with a 6-0 mark. The Lady Eagles (5-7) managed just two runs on five hits, while LSU committed three errors.
Emily Turner (4-1) picked up the complete-game victory, finishing with five strikeouts in the game. Sara Fitzgerald and Lauren Delahoussaye both led LSU with three hits. The Lady Tigers had five others with multiple hits in the game, while Stephanie Hill, Julie Wiese and Leigh Ann Danos all had a home run.
For the Lady Eagles, Danielle Hatfield (3-1) took the loss after throwing two innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits with one strikeout. Jessica Holaway threw four innings in relief, giving up eight runs, seven earned, on 12 hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Freshman Sue Logan led Southern Miss with two hits.
Sophomore Ashley Brenan was the lone Lady Eagle named to the all-tournament team, finishing the three-day event with seven hits, four doubles, one triple and five RBIs.
Southern Miss now takes a four-day break before returning to action next weekend in the Aggie II Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.
