Lady Eagles Split Day Two After Falling To Host LSU
BATON ROUGE, La. -- After posting a commanding win over Alcorn State in the first game on Saturday, Southern Miss could not keep the momentum going, falling to tournament host LSU, 19-1, in five innings in the Purple and Gold Challenge at Tiger Park.
With the loss, the Lady Eagles dropped to 4-6 on the season, while the 13th-ranked Lady Tigers improved to 9-3. Southern Miss finished the game with just one run on seven hits and committed five errors. LSU scored its runs on 15 hits and made two errors.
Southern Miss now awaits the results of the rest of Saturday's action, which will determine seeding for Sunday's bracket round.
The Lady Eagles took the early 1-0 lead after the first inning of play, benefitting from Sarah Boyd's RBI-double down the right field line to score Ashley Brenan.
But that lead would be short-lived as LSU, who was the visitor in the contest, came up big with seven runs in the second inning and eight more in the third to take the 15-1 lead. In the span, the Lady Tigers reeled off nine hits combined off starter Danielle Wymer and relief pitcher Danielle Hatfield, while also taking advantage of four Southern Miss errors.
LSU then tacked on a single run in the fourth inning and three more in the top of the fifth, invoking the run-rule after the Lady Eagles' at bat in the bottom of the fifth.
Wymer (0-2) took the loss after pitching two innings and allowing nine runs, eight earned, on five hits with six walks. Hatfield pitched the final three innings, giving up 10 runs, six earned, on 10 hits. Hatfield also had one strikeout and two walks.
Boyd led Southern Miss with two hits and had the lone RBI.
Emily Turner (4-1) pitched the complete-game, scattering seven runs and allowing just one run. She also had five strikeouts and just one walk.
At the plate, Stephanie Hill led six Lady Tiger batters with multiple hits, finishing with three hits and three RBIs. LaDonia Hughes, Sara Fitzgerald, Leslie Klein, Lauren Delahoussaye and Turner all finished with two hits.
Sunday's action features the top four seeds in the tournament, with the second and third seeds meeting at 9 a.m., and the No. 1-No. 4 game slated for an 11:30 a.m., start. The championship game of the event will be played at 2 p.m.
