Southern Miss Softball Resumes Play, Hosts Nicholls State
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- With an opening-day doubleheader already in the books, the Southern Miss softball team resumes action, Wednesday, hosting Nicholls State in a doubleheader at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
The Lady Eagles (1-1) picked up the split against Louisiana-Monroe in last week's twinbill, while Wednesday's action is the first of the season for the Lady Colonels.
The first game is slated for a 3 p.m., start, while first pitch for the second game is scheduled for 5 p.m. Both games will feature an Internet "Live Stats" broadcast. The "Live Stats" broadcast can be accessed by clicking the appropriate link on the right side of the softball home page on SouthernMiss.com.
Sophomore Ashley Davis leads the Southern Miss offense into the games after putting up a 4-for-4 performance on opening day. Davis finished with two singles, a double and a grand-slam home run, which helped propel the team to a 7-0 second game win over the Lady Indians. Seniors Erica King and Auriel Jenkins both had two hits last week.
On the mound, senior Danielle Hatfield came up with a masterful performance in game two last week, pitching a complete-game, three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts. Senior Jessica Holaway took the opening loss after pitching four innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits. Sophomore Danielle Wymer also saw action on the mound last week, pitching two innings of relief and allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits.
Nicholls State returns all but two starters from last season's group that finished the season with a 29-27 record. Sophomore Lindsay Coleman headlines the returnees after posting a .287 average last season, to go along with 45 hits, eight home runs and 38 RBIs.
Southern Miss trails in the all-time series 32-4, but the Lady Eagles swept the doubleheader the last time the two teams met, winning 5-0 and 8-0 in 2001.
Following Wednesday's action, Southern Miss picks up play on the road, competing in the Sunshine State Classic in Tallahassee, Fla., Friday through Sunday.
