Re: No Parking Zones
The Mississippi Department of Transportation and the Hattiesburg Police Department would like to remind area residents that the medians and grassy areas located along roadways in the city of Hattiesburg are no parking zones. No parking signs have been posted along the center median of Highway 49 to keep everyone mindful of this fact.
While our organizations understand that parking in these areas during crowded university events such as home football games is a temptation, parking in these no parking zones is a hazard to public safety. Citizens should park in the proper parking areas as designated by the University of Southern Mississippi.
Failure to abide by these parking regulations will result in your vehicle being towed.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) will no longer tolerate parking along highway rights-of-way for University of Southern Mississippi (USM) home football games, according to MDOT District Engineer Ricky Lee.
Beginning Saturday, November 6, anyone who parks their vehicle along Highway 49 or Hardy Street-including the median and shoulders-will be towed. MDOT will place signage, including message boards, along the highway alerting motorists to the change.
According to Lee, parking in the median and on the shoulders of Highway 49 and Hardy Street has become a problem during USM home football games. "Safety is our main priority," Lee said. "We want fans to have a good time, but we have to ensure their safety. Violators will have their vehicles towed at the owner's expense." The Hattiesburg Police Department and USM officials will be helping enforce the no parking rule and directing motorists to other parking areas. For more information, contact the MDOT District Office at (601) 544-6511.
