Football Ranked No. 21 In Latest Polls
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss football team (5-1), enjoying an offweek after defeating East Carolina, 51-10, on Oct. 23 in its last game, has moved up four places to No. 21 in both the Associated Press and The USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll.
The Golden Eagles broke into the polls on Oct. 10, when they entered at No. 24 in the Associated Press and No. 25 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. They dropped out the next week before entering again at No. 25 in both polls last week. Conference USA member Louisville is ranked No. 14 in the AP Poll and No. 16 in the Coaches Poll.
Southern Miss has won 13-straight Conference USA games dating back to the end of the 2002 season and with a win this week over Cincinnati will tie its own Conference USA record of 14-straight conference games, set from the middle of the 1998 season until it was snapped on Nov. 4, 2000.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m., at M. M. Roberts Stadium as they host Cincinnati, winners of its last two games (49-10 over Memphis, 21-10 over TCU). The Department of Athletics will honor several -time All-Pro (NFL), Collegiate All-American and former Golden Eagle standout punter Ray Guy for his induction in the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame that will take place in December in New York.
