Boley, Eubanks Named Conference USA Players Of The Week

Michael Boley was named midseason All-American and the Conference USA Player of the Midseason last week by College Football News.com.

HATTIESBURG, Miss.? Southern Miss senior linebacker Michael Boley and junior punt/kick returner John Eubanks were named Conference USA Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week respectively today, for the week ending Oct. 25.

This marks the third time this season that Boley has won the award. In the team?s 51-10 win over East Carolina, he finished with 11 tackles, including a career-high five tackles for a loss. Boley also recorded a season-high two sacks and had one pass breakup in the game. For his career, Boley has recorded 20 career double-digit tackle games.

Boley leads the team with 74 total tackles, including 41 solos and 33 assists. He has 10 tackles for loss and four sacks on the season, in addition to an interception, two pass breakups and three forced fumbles. He ranks No. 5 nationally in total tackles per game (12.17), tied for No. 11 in solo tackles per game (6.67) and tied for No. 5 in forced fumbles per game (.50).

Boley was named a midseason All-American and the Conference USA Player of the Midseason last week by College Football News.com.

In addition, Boley is currently a semifinalist for the Butkus Award, given annually to the nation?s top linebacker. Before the 2004 season began, Boley was a consensus preseason All-American and tabbed as Conference?s USA preseason Defensive Player of the Year. He was also named to the Bednarik Award Watch List, Lombardi Award Watch, and Bronko Nagurski Watch List.

Following the team?s 21-17 season-opening victory at Nebraska, Boley was tabbed the Walter Camp Football Foundation?s National Defensive Player of the Week, and the FWAA-Bronco Nagurski National Player of the Week. In that game, Boley recorded 20 tackles, two forced fumbles, a tackle for a loss, and a pass breakup.

Eubanks had 132 yards in returns in the team?s 51-10 win over East Carolina. He returned a punt 51 yards to the three-yard line to set up one touchdown, while running a kickoff back 84 yards to set up another. Eubanks now leads the nation in kickoff return average with 34.42 yards a return.

Eubanks was named for the honor for the third time in his career and the second time this season. Eubanks won the honor following his performance in the team?s Houston game, Oct. 7. In that game, he had three kickoff returns for 158 yards in Southern Miss? 35-29 overtime win, including a 97-yard return for a touchdown that was the longest return in M.M. Roberts Stadium history.

For the year, Eubanks has four punt returns for 51 yards and 12 kickoff returns for 413 yards and a touchdown.

Southern Miss, ranked No. 25 in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA TODAY Coaches Poll, is off this week. The Golden Eagles return to action, Nov. 6, hosting Cincinnati in a 2 p.m., contest.
