Basketball Squads Hold Midday Madness
During the event, the Golden Eagles and Lady Eagles competed in 12-minute scrimmages and also took part in a 3-point shooting competition, all before going through an autograph session for fans in attendance.
Southern Miss Head Coach Larry Eustachy and Lady Eagle Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis both said the event was a positive one for the Golden Eagle basketball community.
"I think this was great for everybody involved," Eustachy said. "It's a good start for the season. I thought the fan turnout was great, and it was good experience for our team to play in front of a crowd. It was fantastic."
McNelis echoed the sentiments of her counterpart and knows that any exposure for the program is welcomed.
"Anytime you get some exposure for the program, it's a big plus," McNelis said. "Both of our programs have our work cut out for us. We have to build our following in the community, and having an event like this helps us do that."
In the women's scrimmage, Dianca Jones led all players with 12 points and added two rebounds, while LaToya George and Liz Biland each added six points. Biland led all players with five rebounds.
Solomon Brown led the men's players with six points and three rebounds, while Dante Stiggers and Jasper Johnson both added five points. Stiggers also had a game-high four assists, and Mildon Ambres had four rebounds.
