Golden Eagles Go Through Final Practices Before Classes Begin
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss has been hard at it for the past two weeks, and the final practices before classes begin are close to wrapping up.
The Golden Eagles practiced once on Thursday -- going for nearly two hours in the afternoon -- and will take part in the final two-practice day on Friday.
"(Today's practice) was pretty good," Southern Miss Head Coach Jeff Bower said. "We didn't catch the ball well, but that is just lack of concentration. I thought our offensive line came out and worked hard today, and I was pleased to see that."
Thursday's session came off the heels of Wednesday night's scrimmage -- one in which Bower was pleased with after viewing the game tapes.
"It was better than I thought," Bower said. "The players gave good effort, and we are getting there. We have to polish a lot of things up, and we have some guys who haven't played very much. So, we have work to do. But the players are working hard, and they are getting better."
Bower did say that senior defensive back Alex Ray was held out of practice today, recovering from a slight hamstring injury suffered in the initial stages of Wednesday's scrimmage.
The Golden Eagles are scheduled for two sessions tomorrow, one at 7:35 a.m., and the second at 3:55 p.m. Practice continues Saturday, with a final scrimmage set for 3:30 p.m. The scrimmage is closed to the public.
