Golden Eagles Put Forth Better Effort Tuesday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - After a disappointing practice day on Monday, the Southern Miss football team improved on its performance today.
The Golden Eagles practiced once on Tuesday, and put forth a better effort in all phases of the practice, according to Head Coach Jeff Bower.
"It was much better today," Bower said. "There was a much better effort. The execution was better, and we had a lot fewer mental errors. The tempo of the practice was good, and that is the way it has to be every day."
Southern Miss will practice twice on Wednesday, holding a morning session and a night session. In the latter practice, the team holds its second scrimmage of the preseason -- one that Bower and his staff will have their eyes on.
"I am looking for performance (in the scrimmage)," Bower said. "The biggest thing is that we want to play with great effort, but also eliminate the missed assignments. We have been harping on that all week."
The team also will work a little more on the kicking game in Wednesday's scrimmage.
The night session will be the first of the preseason, changing the pattern of the past few days of practice.
"It is real good to break it up," Bower said. "It gets us out of a routine, and that helps in the preseason. It keeps us mentally fresh. We are also going to play some night games, and the scrimmage gives us a chance to get out under the lights."
Bower said that senior defensive back Greg Brooks sat out today's session, recovering from a spider bite. He is expected to return for Wednesday's work.
Preseason work continues through Saturday, when a final scrimmage will take place. The remaining scrimmages will be closed to the general public.
