Golden Eagle Players Report Sunday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The preseason slate of the 2003 Golden Eagles football program begins Sunday, albeit in a slightly different manner than in recent years.
Due to changes in the NCAA football preseason and reporting guidelines this year, both the first-year players and the returnees will report on Sunday.
All players will check in between 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., Sunday, and will then attend a full squad meeting at 4 p.m.
While the players all report at the same time, the first-year players still will practice on their own for the first few days. All first-year player practices will run from 10 a.m., through noon each day, beginning on Monday and ending on Thursday.
During the first week of practice, the varsity players will attend weightlifting sessions while the first-year players practice in the morning. In the afternoons, varsity players will run through specialty workouts, and the first-year players will go through various orientation meetings.
The first full practice for all players is scheduled for Friday, beginning at 1 p.m. Two-a-days begin on Saturday, Aug. 9, with practices scheduled for 7:35 a.m., and 3:55 p.m. The new NCAA regulations also mandate that two-a-day workouts may not be held on consecutive days.
The annual Meet the Eagles/Media Day events of recent years, also will be different this year. On Saturday, Aug. 9, Eighth Annual Golden Eagle FanFare festivities will be held at Reed Green Coliseum, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The entire squad will be in attendance and available to the public immediately afterwards.
Tickets can be purchased at the Ogletree Alumni House (266-5013), the Pat Ferlise Center (266-5418) or from members of the South Central - Hattiesburg Metro USM Alumni Board. Adult tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. Tickets for children 6-12 are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Children under 6 will be admitted free.
Media day will be held on Sunday, Aug.10, at M.M. Roberts Stadium and the Athletic Center and is open only to the media.
Southern Miss opens the season on Aug. 30, when the Golden Eagles travel to play California in Berkeley, Calif.
