Lady Eagles Win Extra-Inning Battle Against Houston
Sarah Boyd's double in the bottom of the eighth gave the Lady Eagles the extra-inning win over Houston and advancement in the C-USA tourney. |
Sarah Boyd?s double to left centerfield knocked in Tammy Edwards for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Edwards reached base on a throwing error by shortstop Jaci Gonzalez.
A total of 26 hits were accumulated by both teams. Southern Miss (28-29) swatted 14, led by Ashley Brenan who hit 3-for-4 with two runs and Auriel Jenkins who batted 3-for-5 with a run. Houston (36-24) collected 12 hits, as Kim Nesloney was 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs.
Eight Lady Eagles collected hits, as Amanda Brown hit 2-for-5 with a run and three RBIs. Edwards batted two-for-three with a run and an RBI, and Jessica Huerta was 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Laura Smith was 1-for-2, and Ashley Davis finished 1-for-4.
The Cougars knotted the game in the top of the sixth, 6-6, when Michelle Keith blasted a solo home run. They scored their fifth run on the fifth, as Nesloney scored on a throwing error by Ashley Davis at second base.
The Lady Eagles tallied four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Brown smoked a three-run home run, scoring pinch runner Kim Bishop and Brenan on the shot. Edwards doubled in the frame and scored Jenkins, giving Southern Miss a 6-4 lead.
Arelis Ferreris added her second home run of the tournament with a three-run blast in the third inning, plating Kristen Glowacz and Nesloney and giving Houston a 4-2 lead.
Huerta started the scoring for USM in the bottom of the second, with her first home run of the season. The freshman placed her two-run bomb beyond centerfield and scored Brenan on the play.
Jenilee Skender put the Cougars on the board with an RBI single in the first, scoring Nesloney.
Jessica Holaway (15-15) came in relief and recorded the win for the Lady Eagles. She went two innings and collected two hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
Crystal Briscoe (10-7) got the loss for the Cougars. The freshman pitched 1.2 innings and recorded two hits, one unearned run, one walk and two strikeouts.
