Yates Awarded Another Year
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- University of Southern Mississippi defensive back Corey Yates has been granted a waiver by the NCAA and will be a member of Head Coach Jeff Bower's Golden Eagle football team during the 2003 season.
A Holly Springs, Miss., native, Yates was redshirted in 1998, played in 22 games over the following two seasons, and in the opening game of the 2001 season. A torn anterior cruciate ligament forced him to miss the remainder of that season, and, after tearing an ACL in preseason practice prior to the 2002 season, he was forced to sit out all of last season as well.
"We're happy to have Corey back with us," said Bower. He has put in a lot of hard work, and gone through a couple of tough years with the injuries. It would be great to have him come out and have an outstanding senior season for us.
"Also, a lot of the credit for Corey being here another year has to go to Don Oberhelman (associate athletic director for compliance) who has put in a lot of hours working with the NCAA to provide Corey this opportunity.
The 2003 season will mark Yates' sixth at Southern Miss.
