Lady Eagles Go To Louisiana, Seeking Wins

HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss softball team has not fared well in recent weeks, producing only two wins in its last 11 games. The Lady Eagles look for a change in results as they go on a weeklong trip through the state of Louisiana.
The first stop is in Lafayette, La., where Southern Miss will face Louisiana-Lafayette in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 9, beginning at 2 p.m. The Lady Eagles have lost the last three meetings against the Lady Cajuns, including a doubleheader sweep last season, in Hattiesburg, 2-1 and 3-1. In 2001, Southern Miss lost to UL Lafayette in the first round of the NCAA Regionals, 5-1.
The last time Southern Miss defeated the Lady Cajuns was in 1999, when ULL was ranked fourth in the nation. The Lady Eagles collected the 8-0 win over Lafayette at the Lady Vol Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn.
Sarah Boyd leads the Lady Eagles with a .367 batting average. The junior hit 4-for-7 in the three-game series against Houston, with two doubles and three RBIs. In five home games, Boyd is batting 8-for-12, .667, with a run, four doubles and five RBIs.
Auriel Jenkins is batting .295. She leads the squad with 10 runs scored, three home runs and six stolen bases.
Danielle Hatfield leads the team in ERA at 1.54. In appearances in the pitcher?s circle, the junior is 1-0 and has recorded 12 hits, three earned runs, one walk and nine strikeouts.
The Lady Cajuns have produced 22 home runs in 12 games this season. Eight different batters have swatted at least one home run. Becky McMurtry and Jill Robertson lead the squad with four each.
Danyele Gomez is ULL?s top hitter, batting .375. She claims a team-best 15 runs scored, three doubles, three home runs and nine RBIs.
McMurtry follows with a .333 batting average. She also has hit four doubles and 12 RBIs.
Lady Cajun pitcher Michael Parrot is 4-0 this season and has yet to surrender an earned run in her five appearances and four starts. In 24.1 innings, she has recorded 15 hits, three unearned runs, two walks and 10 strikeouts. Brooke Mitchell is 4-2 on the year, with a 1.55 ERA, 20 hits, nine earned runs, 14 walks and 62 strikeouts.
On Tuesday, March 11, Southern Miss will travel to Natchitoches, La., to take on Northwestern (La.) State in a doubleheader, beginning at 5 p.m. The Lady Eagles swept the Demons earlier this season, 4-2 and 5-4.
A doubleheader in Lake Charles, La., against McNeese State will conclude the Louisiana trip, on Thursday, March 13, at 5 p.m.
