Eagles End Regular Season At Tulane
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss plays its final regular-season game of the 2002-03 season at Tulane, Saturday, and then will move on to the Conference USA Tournament in Louisville, Ky., Mar. 12-15.
The Eagles used a Mar. 1, 70-62, victory over South Florida to earn the final spot in the Freedom Hall event. Pairings will be announced following the final regular-season games.
Saturday's game at Tulane will be the second of the season between the two teams. Southern Miss posted a 76-72 decision over the Green Wave in Hattiesburg two weeks ago. In that game, the Golden Eagles trailed 35-28 at the half, but outscored the visitors 48-37 in the second half.
Southern Miss put four players in double figures in that game, with Clement Carter turning in his best game of the season with 20 points. Greg Johnson added 17, Charles Gaines 16 and Jasper Johnson 10. Waitari Marsh led Tulane with a game-high 21 points.
The Golden Eagles turned in one of their better shooting games of the season in that game, hitting 26-of-51 (.510) field goals and an even better 21-of-25 (.840) free throws.
The game will be the 56th between the two teams. Tulane leads the series, 34-21, and in the last 11 games, Southern Miss holds a slim 6-5 edge.
Gaines continues to lead the Golden Eagles in scoring, at 14.8 points a game, while Greg Johnson averages 12.9 and Jasper Johnson 11.0. Marsh averages 15.4 points to lead the Green Wave.
Tulane averages 71.5 points a game, and Southern Miss is averaging 67.7. The Eagles give up 70.3 points a game and Tulane 69.5.
Tulane is coming off a 72-60 Wednesday night loss at South Florida, a loss that dropped the Green Wave to 14-14, overall, and 7-8 in Conference USA play.
