Cougars Take Last Game Against Lady Eagles
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss softball team suffered its fifth-straight loss today, as Houston defeated the Lady Eagles, 5-1, in the final game of the Conference USA series. The Cougars are the second team to ever sweep Southern Miss in a C-USA series.
The bats came alive for Houston (13-10, 3-0 in C-USA) in the fifth inning, as the Cougars produced all five runs in the frame, as well as five of their nine hits in the game. Kristen Glowacz singled up the middle to score Lindsay Durham and tied the game at 1-1. Arelis Ferreris followed with a single through the left side of the infield to score Jaci Gonzalez on the go-ahead run.
Jenilee Skender extended Houston?s lead with a single up the middle and scored Jeanie Davis and Glowacz. Candis Turnbo finished the Cougars? scoring with another single up the midde and plated Ferreris.
Glowacz led Houston with a 3-for-4 plate performance, collecting two doubles a run and an RBI. Ferreris batted 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI, and Skender was 2-for-3 with two RBI singles.
Southern Miss (7-12, 0-3) scored in the bottom of the first when Sarah Boyd singled in Auriel Jenkins. Boyd was 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Tammy Edwards hit 2-for-3.
Cougar pitcher Crystal Briscoe improved to 4-3 on the year. She pitched four innings and recorded two hits, one run, and two strikeouts. Jenny Johnson collected her first save of the season, going three innings with two hits and two strikeouts.
Jessica Holaway (3-7) lost her fifth-straight decision, going 4.1 innings and surrendering five runs, six hits and five walks. Danielle Hatfield came in relief, pitching 2.2 innings and giving up three hits.
Southern Miss goes back on the road for a tour of Louisiana. The Lady Eagles face Louisiana-Lafayette in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 9, at 2 p.m. They will play at Northwestern (La.) State in doubleheader on Tuesday, March 11, at 5 p.m., and at McNeese State in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 13, at 5 p.m.
