HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss softball team fell victim to Houston?s bats, as the Cougars took two against the Lady Eagles this evening, 6-3 and 9-1 (six innings). Houston has now won four straight against Southern Miss, including two last weekend at LSU?s Purple and Gold Challenge.
Game One: Houston 6, Southern Miss 3
Lindsay Durham blasted a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to give Houston the 5-3 lead. The tater was the junior?s first homer of the season, as she attacked the 3-1 pitch and sent it over the left field fence, scoring Michelle Keith on the play.
Pinch runner Jenny Baker added an insurance run in the seventh, when she crossed the plate on Jenilee Skender?s sacrifice fly. Skender ended the game with three RBIs.
A pair of Lady Eagle doubles helped Southern Miss in the fifth, as Auriel Jenkins stroked a two-bagger to score Heather Bell, and Sarah Boyd, who batted 2-for-3 in the first game, doubled to center and plated Jenkins, knotting the game, 3-3.
In the top of the fifth, Jeanie Davis, who hit a perfect 3-for-3 in game one, collected her second run when Arelis Ferreris reached base on a fielding error by Ashley Davis at second base.
Jenkins recorded her third home run in four games in the third inning to put Southern Miss on the board. The junior went 2-for-4 in the opener with two runs and two RBIs.

The Lady Eagles were run-ruled for the first time in a Conference USA game, as Houston matched its hit total of 11 hits in game one and defeated Southern Miss, 9-1, in six innings. The nine runs is also the most a C-USA team has ever scored in a game against the Lady Eagles.
